Use of phonics rules to read words, alertness to punctuation, enunciation, accuracy and fluency.
Second grade
Use of phonics rules to read words, comprehension, reading with meaning and expression, smoothness, alertness to punctuation, volume, enunciation, speed, accuracy and poise.
Third grade
Appreciation of literature; developing skills in the areas of comprehension, decoding and vocabulary. Literature units are also done after a novel has been read together
Fourth grade
Vocabulary instruction-word identification, vocabulary development; decoding-structural analysis, phonics; auditory/visual discrimination, comprehension-figurative language, reality/fantasy; life and study skills-practical school context, non-school contents. One literature unit per year.
Fifth grade
Vocabulary-word recognition, context clues, multiple meanings, classification, analogies; Comprehension-main idea, author’s purpose, character development, cause/effect, drawing conclusions, prediction outcomes, sequence, comparison; Word decoding-prefixes, suffixes, roots, multi-syllabic words; Oral reading; life and Study Skills-book parts, resources, summaries, consumer information, dictionary, directions, maps, charts, graphs; Novel unit; Book reports.
Sixth grade
Vocabulary; literary elements; grammar, writing, speaking, listening, comprehension
