First grade
Spelling memorization and application of phonics rules to spelling.

Second grade
Spelling memorization and application of phonics rules to spelling.

Third grade
Children have 16 words on the list and the opportunity to add four Home Base Words for a total of 20 words in each lesson. The emphases at this grade level ad-letter relationships, expanding the difficulty of the words to several syllables and using the spelling words in context.

Fourth grade
Integrates spelling into the language arts process. Lessons are designed to incorporate spelling with vocabulary development, grammar, dictionary skills, and creative writing.

Fifth grade
The fifth grade spelling book provides a basic review of phonics principles, and spelling generalizations with an emphasis on exceptions. There is an emphasis on r-controlled vowels, the use of schwa, and syllabication. Many lessons refer to vocabulary development, the use of words, in context, word origins, prefixes and suffixes, expanding forms of words, parts of speech, visual memory
