By following Psalm 92:1, "It is good to praise the Lord and make music to Your name," this course is designed to help children develop an understanding of music through the study of music theory, history, performance, and the practical application of music in everyday life.
Music provides a means for creativity and self-expression. Children should have the opportunity to explore all avenues of music. Martin Luther stated "Music is a noble gift of God next to theology. We must teach music in schools." God has not limited musical expression to non-secular topics; because He is the creator of the world, a variety of music can be used for study and appreciation. And as students are taught and begin to develop a knowledge and understanding of music, they will begin to apply the skills and understanding to make critical judgments concerning the quality of music experiences.
More advanced music theory is explored in the sixth grade, including major and minor tonality, singing in 2-4 part harmonies. Sixth graders also review the orchestra and different musical styles. Additionally students continue learning about important composers throughout our musical history.
Beginner Band: The Band is open to all students regardless of musical background. Students will learn to play an instrument of their choice in a group setting. Activities include learning to read music, proper care and handling of an instrument, and lots of music making. Be prepared for a year long commitment with daily practice time at home. Expect work hard to be rewarding and fun! (Students with prior experience may be given additional leadership and/or performance opportunities.)
